THE best comedy anime ever to exist....

An amazing anime that can’t be summarized or categorized in a few words.

It’s completely unbelievable in its style of narration, the way it builds its characters… It lures you in with the deception that it is ‘funny’. Don’t get me wrong, it is, but Gintama is so, so much more than just a ‘parody’ or the ‘funniest anime in the world’, though the latter is a title it definitely deserves.

It’s the ultimate troll anime. Watch the first few episodes and you’ll be marveling over how weird it is. Aliens invading Japan? Uhhh… OK. Even when you’re 20 odd episodes in, you’ll remain convinced that this anime is just one that fools around with insane toilet jokes and fourth-wall-breaking gags. You think this is all Gintama is about.

And then suddenly it hits. Suddenly the troll face goes and you’ll wonder why there are tears down your face after you’ve watched the Mitsuba arc. You’ll sit trembling with excitement throughout the Shinsengumi Crisis arc, gasping in awe at the power of the Yato throughout the Yoshiwara in Flames arc. You’ll marvel at their camaraderie in the Four Devas Arc, and that’s when you realize you’ve grown attached to them. The gorilla, the sadist, the glasses, the China girl, the anpan freak, the mayonnaise addict and the silver-haired samurai who eat far too much sugar. They’ve wormed their way into your heart and you’ve grown to recognize their jokes and their behavior. In those arcs they flesh themselves out to become true people, and in them lies the beauty of Sorachi’s character developments.

Gintama’s characters are unique. They befriend you with their bickering and their banter until you grow familiar with them, and then they reveal to you their pasts. Most of the cast in Gintama have experienced absolute miseries in their past, some, you could even say, have experienced hell. Yet as you watch these memories and hear the stories pour out you marvel at the fact that they are the same characters who, in their daily antics, can make you laugh so hard you have tears in your eyes. Unlike the characters of other shounen anime, the Gintama characters never dwell on their past. They focus on the present.

They focus on every day spent with each other and the tragedy of yesterday will never interfere with the happiness of today. And you won’t realize it for a long time, but one day you’ll think back, and you’ll realize you’ve been taught a lot. Amidst the laughter and tears, you’ve been taught how to live. Simply, happily. Gintama doesn’t preach. It doesn’t shove its sense of justice or any ridiculously overdramatic motivation into your face. A few quiet words, a soft smile, and a beautiful BGM for you to reflect if you so wished. You don’t have to go away with philosophical ideas spewing from your brain, but these simple words of wisdom will be enough to lighten any of your darker days.

Someone once said, ‘One Piece is the anime to watch if you’re pursuing your dreams; Gintama is the anime to watch once those dreams have crashed and burned.’ Whilst there is some semblance of truth in those words, you don’t need to have your life in ruins to appreciate Gintama. It’s an anime about picking yourself up, appreciating what you have, cherishing it, enjoying it. It teaches you how to smile. To laugh. To look forwards. Gintama is something special. I haven’t even begun to do it justice in my description here.
